What Does the Evil Eye Mean?
The evil eye is one of the oldest protective symbols in the world. You have probably seen it as a blue and white eye on a bracelet or necklace. Here is what it means and why people wear it.
Where the belief comes from
The idea behind the evil eye is thousands of years old and appears across the Mediterranean, the Middle East, South Asia and Latin America. The belief is that an envious or ill-wishing look can bring bad luck to the person it lands on, often without the other person meaning any harm.
What the charm is for
The eye shaped charm is the answer to that belief. It is worn as an amulet to deflect the look and keep the wearer protected. In Turkey the blue glass version is called a nazar, and you will find it hanging in homes, cars and shops as well as on jewelry.
Why it is usually blue
Blue is the traditional color and the one most closely tied to protection. Modern pieces come in many colors, and some people choose a color for what it means to them or simply because they like it.
How to wear it
There are no rules. Many people wear an evil eye every day as a bracelet or a necklace, and it is a popular gift for a new baby, a new home, a new job or a friend going through a hard time. Our sets come in pairs, so you can keep one and give the other to someone you want to look out for.
